Exploring Calabria on Horseback: An Unforgettable Adventure

Do you love adventure? Seek tranquility? Want a deeper connection to nature? Calabria is the place for you.

And while there are ample opportunities for hiking and biking in Calabria, today let's talk about seeing the beauty of Calabria from atop a horse.

Why Horseback Riding in Calabria?

Horseback riding in Calabria is more than just a recreational activity; it's a journey through time and nature. Here’s why you should consider this unique experience:

1. Diverse Landscapes

Calabria's diverse landscapes range from the rolling hills and vineyards to the rugged mountains of the Aspromonte National Park and the sandy beaches along the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas. Riding through these varied terrains allows you to appreciate the region's natural beauty up close.

2. Rich History and Culture

Calabria is steeped in history, with ancient ruins, medieval castles, and charming villages dotting the landscape. Horseback riding tours often take you through these historical sites, providing a deeper understanding of the region's cultural heritage.

3. Authentic Local Experiences

Riding through small, traditional villages offers a glimpse into the daily lives of the Calabrian people. You can stop by local farms, taste authentic Calabrian cuisine, and even participate in traditional festivals.

Horseback Riding Near Locri

We recently met a few lovely horses who live near Locri. This area was once Magna Grecia, and you'll still find influences of ancient Greece here, including ruins.

These horses, lovingly cared for by a Danish woman who has dedicated herself to raising horses for competition, are available for rides. While the options are many, one option is to ride up to nearby Gerace, which takes about three hours.

There are options for accommodations in the area. Round out your stay with a visit to an olive grove situated at a frantoio, where the oil is processed into oil.

You can also reach Mammola, a town known for stocco, traditional dried fish cooked in a number of ways. Mammola is also home to Musaba, a one-of-a-kind open-air museum. You'll find plenty to do in this region!
