Celebrating the Festa della Madonna del Mare in Soverato

Every year, the coastal town of Soverato in Calabria, Italy, comes alive with the vibrant and deeply spiritual Festa della Madonna del Mare. This annual festival, held on the second Sunday of August, is a heartfelt tribute to the Madonna del Mare, an underwater statue of the Virgin Mary that has become a symbol of protection for the local community.

Mary of the Sea, Protector of Soverato

A statue of the Virgin Mary stands at the bottom of the sea, about 7 meters (23 feet) below the surface, and has become a significant attraction for divers and visitors alike.

The statue was placed underwater in 1969 by the local diving community to protect the sea and its inhabitants. Sculpted by Francesco Gerace, the Madonna is depicted with her arms outstretched in a gesture of protection and blessing. Over the years, the statue has become a symbol of faith and a pilgrimage site for divers.

A Unique Procession from Sea to Shore

In the summer, divers carefully retrieve the statue of the Madonna del Mare from her underwater resting place, where she stands guard over the town’s fishermen and sailors. As the statue is brought to the surface, the atmosphere is one of joy, with church bells ringing and the crowd gathering in anticipation.

The statue is then placed on a boat and parades across the shore of Soverato, accompanied by dozens of boats merrily tooting their horns and waving to onlookers on the beach.

The beaches are crowded on this day, with the reverent and the curious standing on the shore or swimming in the sea in order to get more of Maria's blessings as she passes by.

After her boat tour, Maria leads a procession onshore as well, then is returned to her resting place in the crystal waters.

A Day of Festivities and Tradition

Though the procession takes less than an hour, Italians make an evening of it. Families continue the festivities on the beach, as the sun slowly dips behind the mountains.

In the evening, the town’s waterfront becomes the focal point for more celebrations. Fireworks light up the sky, reflecting off the waters where the Madonna once again resides. The night is filled with music, dancing, dining, and a sense of community that brings together both locals and visitors in a shared celebration of faith and culture.

A Testament to Soverato’s Cultural and Spiritual Identity

The Festa della Madonna del Mare is more than just an annual event; it is a reflection of Soverato’s identity. It underscores the town’s enduring relationship with the sea, its devotion to the Madonna, and its commitment to preserving traditions that have been passed down through generations.

If you're planning a visit to Soverato, experiencing this festival offers you a unique glimpse into the heart of Calabrian culture. It’s a time when the town’s history, faith, and community spirit are on full display, making it an unforgettable experience for all who attend.

Whether you’re drawn by the religious significance, the cultural richness, or simply the beauty of Soverato, the Festa della Madonna del Mare is a celebration that captures the essence of this charming coastal town.
