4 Reasons to Visit Bivongi in Calabria

With so many tiny villages in Calabria, it can be hard to narrow it down. Lucky for you, we know the best places to go!

Bivongi, founded in the 10th century by a group of monks fleeing Saracen raids, is rampant with natural beauty. The village itself hosts several festivals throughout the year, and there are great places to eat, if you know where to go!

1. It's Truly Wild Calabria

Once you veer away from the town, you're immediately immersed in wild Calabria. Even the popular Cascata del Marmarico isn't easy to get to; you've got to hire a Jeep guide to take you up the steep and bumpy road.

The hike from the dropoff point to the waterfall takes about two hours and is for intermediate to advanced hikers. If you're looking for a quick and easy sterilized visit in nature, this isn't for you! But if you're looking for rugged beauty that isn't overcrowded, plan your trip.

2. You Can Heal Your Ailments

Water is a big part of Bivongi's natural features, and that includes a sulphuric creek that feeds the Bagni di Guida, a rustic thermal bath. People have been coming here for decades to soak in the healing waters to cure their aches and maladies.

You can also splash in the creek (bring water shoes), bring a picnic, or order a homemade lunch. Reservations are required, and you'll need a sturdy car to reach the baths, as the road is steep, narrow, and difficult.

3. You Can Eat Traditional Food

Calabria has many fantastic spots for traditional Calabrese dishes, but La Vecchia Miniera just outside of Bivongi is not to be missed. Order the scilatelle con capra to revel in the handmade pasta served with slow-cooked goat in red sauce, and you might not want to leave.

4. It's a Great Place to Try Calabrian Wine

Every summer, Bivongi hosts a popular wine festival, where it shows off some of its DOC wines. And in November, locals flock there for the San Martino festival, where wine tasting mingles with food and dance.

Bivongi is perfectly positioned just 20 minutes from the Ionian Sea. It's easy to reach (though you may need to hire a guide to take you to the waterfall), and makes for the perfect day trip on your Calabrian vacation.
